- Richard Sack (1972 PhD International Development Education) shares memories of his involvement with anti-Vietnam War protests while at Stanford, including Stop the Draft Week in Oakland, the sit-in at the Applied Electronics Laboratory, and a public pledge he signed to refuse the draft--an action that led to negative feedback from Paul Hanna, the head of his graduate department. Sack also reflects on the impact that growing up as a “red diaper baby”--the child of politically radical parents--had on his approach to activism, leading to his involvement with SANE and the anti-nuclear movement as an undergraduate at the University of Pennsylvania and time spent teaching in Algeria just after it gained independence from France.
