Seismic Analysis of Oil Refinery Structures, Part II - Evaluation of Seismic Design Criteria
Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
The dynamic seismic analysis of the columns resulted in the determination of their vibrational characteristics, consisting of mode shapes, natural periods, and participation factors. Individual modal contributions to acceleration, force, shear, and displacement of each mass were combined by the SRSS method. The effects of including fluid weight were examined. The results of the dynamic analyses are expressed in terms of base shear, base overturning moment, relative displacement, and absolute acceleration.
The effects of foundation stiffness was investigated to a limited extent, and it was found that foundation flexibility has essentially no effect on the results of this study.
A comparison between a column analyzed by equivalent lateral forces and realistic earthquake forces was made. Also, the maximum seismic input that a column could sustain was determined approximately. Thus, methods of analyzing these structures have been developed in the course of this study.
