Abstract
California water managers are facing a dilemma as the state experiences a growing demand coupled with a shrinking and uncertain water supply. Traditional methods of addressing water supply needs are not fit to meet future challenges, and water managers must instead look to new and innovative solutions. However, to make this management shift, utilities must understand customer water use patterns and demand. The goal of this research is to therefore acquire new knowledge of what affects urban water use and to develop tools that better project future needs. We begin this project by investigating the factors affecting urban water use. Looking at a case study in Mesa Water District, California, we first examine water use patterns and trends. Then, we look at water consumption over time for Single Family Residential (SFR) homes to evaluate the factors most correlated with water use. Lastly, we investigate the impact of watering restrictions on water consumption across all sectors. These project components contribute to the end goal of our research, to create an end-use water and electricity demand forecasting tool that helps managers incorporate the best new water supply solutions that meet demand.
