Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
- Urban stormwater runoff is one of the most important sources of contaminants to the nation’s coastal waters. While there are studies documenting concentrations of fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) in urban runoff, there is a striking lack of studies quantifying the concentrations of viral human pathogens. Additionally, there are no studies quantifying FIB and pathogen concentrations and fluxes in urban runoff in the San Francisco Bay area. Possible sources include treated wastewater, groundwater contaminated by leaking sewer lines, raw sewage spills, urban runoff, and animal feces. The goal of this project is to characterize the concentrations and flux of FIB and pathogens in urban stormwater runoff discharging into the Bay from urban creeks. Although work was conducted locally, the results will be of broad interest globally to those managing urban coastal waters. Additionally, the work will provide useful information to the state of California as it develops and implements San Francisco Bay TMDLs.
