Abstract
Inspired by the "Me Too" movement in the end of the second decade of the 21st century, this dissertation is an attempt to articulate a grounding theory for the value of human sexuality through the lens of personal autonomy. It derives a concept of "sexual autonomy" from the value of sex and sexuality in human life and argues that autonomy grounds the value of intimate expression and provides a framework for its proper regulation. As a foundational value, autonomy underpins and explains the notion of "consent", which defines contemporary understandings of sexual assault. The first two chapters of this dissertation develop the connection between the value of sexuality in human life, with the notion of sexual autonomy as a version of personal autonomy. Subsequent chapters examine the practical implications of this understanding of sexual autonomy for legal and social reform of the regulation of the sexual sphere.
