Abstract
SEDRIC RISE is a personal assistant robot with the capability of removing all effort from the user’s side in using Volkswagen’s autonomous taxi SEDRIC. It is easily called outside the vehicle through the SEDRIC app. The clamping system prevents the wheelchair from rolling off the pod and provides securement inside the vehicle. A safety mini-ramp at the front of the robot is actuated to provide additional support to the clamps. The robot rests on motor-driven wheels at the back and passive ball casters in the front which allow it to climb the ramp, turn inside the vehicle and position itself. To ensure a minimum incline to enter the robot, all the electronics for the clamping and drivetrain are housed in the back of the robot. It would require the user to roll back onto a very small incline, press a confirmation button on the app, and RISE would take care of the rest. Currently, its motion can be controlled using an arduino controller app on your mobile phone. RISE’s chassis has been manufactured using sheet Aluminum and an Aluminum honeycomb baseplate for a good strength to weight ratio. The back box which houses all the control electronics has a rigid frame made from Aluminum 80-20 extrusion to provide additional structural stability. RISE uses encoders on the drivetrain motors for a closed loop feedback control to drive straight and turn 90 degrees. It also incorporates a bluetooth module to allow for control using an app on the phone.
