Abstract
This thesis project aims to connect findings on Tang paintings with poetic tradition in a larger scale in Chinese art history, looking at specific topics and aspects under the subject. I employ a historical approach by looking at the change through time from mid Tang to late Tang by textual analysis and literary reading. I divide this paper in three major aspects: 1) Relationship of painted image to nature; 2) Creation and development of technical and aesthetic ideals in poems; 3) Painting as an interactive and live performance. This newly emerged poetic form contributes to aesthetic tastes and cultural identity in Tang Dynasty and later largely influences Chinese art and literary history.
