Magical Orality in Tess Uriza Holthe’s When the Elephants Dance
Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
- Nearly half a century after the end of World War II, Filipino-American author Tess Uriza Holthe brings to life the near-forgotten history of the Battle of Manila in her 2002 novel, When the Elephants Dance. Through an illumination of character systems in relation to "magical orality," Pacio demonstrates how Holthe's reclamation of memory serves to disrupt traditional historical portrayals and create an entirely new narrative of the revolutionary history of the Philippines.
