- The problem of sanding is one that has been with the petroleum industry for an extensive period of time. This problem is very typical of many Gulf Coast and California reservoirs. Within the past fifteen to twenty years, there has been considerable research done in many aspects of this problem in an attempt to control sand failure. Essentially, there are two ways to look at a sanding problem. First, we can attempt to simulate or predict that mechanism which occurs, or secondly, we can, regardless of the mechanism, make an attempt to control such problems when they do occur. So far it seems that the main interest in the industry has been to use the second approach.It has now come to the point, however, where we can look into the future of a well or of a whole reservoir and see situations which might stimulate such problems. Thus, we would like to know how t predict such occasions so that we can use our newly developed control techniques prior to costly failures. The intent of this study is to develop a sand failure model which will allow us to relate log derived strength parameters to the mechanical loads developed on the formation during failure.
