- In this interview conducted during the 50th anniversary reunion of the April Third Movement (A3M), Joann Johnson (1971 BA Communication) speaks about her family background, the path that led her from Bakersfield Community College to Stanford, and her participation in antiwar and other activism as a student. In particular, she describes her experience working for Stanford’s Program in African and African American Studies under the directorship of St. Clair Drake; a strike at Stanford University Hospital organized by the United Stanford Employees union in April 1971; and the work of the Black Student Union in East Palo Alto and other nearby communities. She also reflects on the racial and gender dynamics of activist movements during that era and describes her career after Stanford.
