WP065: Near- Medium- and Long-Term Benefits of Information Technology in Construction
Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
- Information technolgy has been on a long, slow path of implementation in the construction industry. The AEC industry has been remakably resistant to the cataclysmic business changes of consolidation, productivity improvement and globalization which have overtaken the automotive, aerospace and discreet manufacturing industries. In this paper, we explore some of the near and long term information technology challenges facing the construction industry, and suggest how new information technology tools will enable three crucial new capabilities with the potential to create the profound changes seen in these other industries. Thes capabilities are tools that allow simulations of constuction processes and visual simulations; transaction performance measurement tools; and improved data sharing with flexible product model schemas. This paper summarizes the ongoing research, development, and implementation of these new capabilities in early-adopter organizations and provides a roadmap to the short-, medium-, and long-term adoption by the AEC industry.
