Miocene extension in the East Range, Nevada: Documenting multiple episodes of normal faulting using low-temperature thermochronology
Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
- The East Range and Sou Hills in north-central Nevada is situated between two documented Miocene Basin-and-Range extensional domains. The central Nevada domain is characterized by multiple extensional events, specifically, an important faulting event ca. 17-15 Ma, that have resulted in large magnitude extension (50-150%). In contrast, extension in northwestern Nevada is characterized by a single episode of faulting (<12 Ma) that produced considerably smaller total magnitude extension (15-20%). However, the boundary between these two domains is not well defined. In this study, detailed mapping of the Tertiary stratigraphy of the Sou Hills coupled with apatite fission track and (U-Th)/He dating in the adjacent East Range documents a two-phase record of faulting and extensional strain (the first event at 17-15 Ma followed by renewed faulting younger than ~10 Ma). These results help explain the evolution of the boundary between the two extensional domains.
