Abstract
This model study of geothermal fluids production from consolidated porous media has a two-fold purpose: (l) the development of methods for constructing and operating models for the study of geothermal steam production from consolidated porous media, and (2) investigation of vapor pressure lowering phenomena arising from interfacial tension effects. The existence of vapor pressure lowering due to interfacial tension was documented by J. C. Calhoun and co-workers in 19^9* Their work was done at 97?F and therefore may not be representative of porous solids at temperatures commonly associated with geothermal reservoirs. This problem was addressed by Gilbert V. Cady in 1969 and again by H. L. Bilhartz in 1970 in their experimental work with unconsolidated porous media at Stanford University* Both studies concluded that vapor pressure lowering phenomena was not significant in unconsolidated porous media. The experimental work here-in presented is an extension of their investigations to consolidated porous sandstone.Introductory material presented in the text comprises general background information about geothermal energy. An impressive volume of literature has recently been published on the subject, stimulated by a growing interest in geothermal energy as an economic mineral resource. The material discussed in "Statement of the Problem" provides a context of technical theory upon which the findings of this experimental investigation bear. The sections dealing with physical descriptions of the apparatus and techniques used to prepare the reservoir may provide useful background for future experimental work with consolidated porous media at elevated temperatures.I wish to thank the Southern California Edison Co. for partially funding my academic expenses while conducting this study, and the Tenneco Oil Co. for their grant which funded portions of the experimental apparatus. I am indebted to H. L. Bilhartz whose familiarity with the electronic equipment used in the experiment was of invaluable assistance.
