The Stoning of St. Stephen
Abstract/Contents
- Description
- Master B.F. (Lombardy, Lodi near Milan, c. 1510) Historiated initial S cut from an antiphonal illustrating the stoning of St. Stephen (166 x 166mm). The saint kneels in prayer while behind him the tormentors stand poised to hurl their stones. Leonardo’s influence on this illuminator is clear in the bluish hills and city reflected in the water. Also characteristic of the Master B.F.’s elegant work is the intricate modelling of the clouds, in which an angel can be seen lifting Stephen’s soul to heaven. The initial is one of a group of cuttings that can be traced back to a series of choirbooks made for the Olivetan monastery of SS Angelo e Nicolo at Lodi near Milan. From the collection of William Young Ottley, and in his sale at Sotheby’s on May 1, 1838. Subsequently in the collection of Lord Northwick, and in his sale at Sotheby’s on November 16, 1925.
