Abstract
The AD-GPRS framework was modified to simulate geothermal reservoirs. AD-GPRS (automatic differentiation general purpose research simulator) is a computational framework that allows for fully compositional and thermal reservoir simulation. This study looked specifically at the geothermal single-component, two-phase case. AD-GPRS is based on an automatic differentiation library that allows for a flexible treatment of the variable formulation and the nonlinear terms within the formulation. This allows a geothermal application functionality to be integrated within this framework. Two nonlinear formulations were developed and implemented using the AD-GPRS framework: a pressure, temperature and saturation formulation and a pressure, enthalpy formulation. To verify the results obtained from geothermal AD-GPRS, comparisons with other models were carried out. The geothermal AD-GPRS results were compared to analytical and semianalytical models to verify the solutions obtained from the simulator. For situations where an analytical solution was unavailable, TOUGH2, a commonly used reservoir simulator was used for comparison. AD-GPRS had very good agreement with the results obtained from the other methods. Once the solutions were verified for these test cases, a comparison of the nonlinear behavior between the two formulations was carried out. In particular the behavior for the two formulations for an unstable physical phenomena of cold water injecting into hot steam known as "negative compressibility" was investigated. From these comparisons, it was found that the pressure, temperature and saturation formulation performed better than the pressure, enthalpy formulation.
