WP008: Using CAE to Improve Construction Planning, Operations and Quality
Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
- Computer-aided engineering (CAE), computer-aided design/drafting (CAD), and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) are rapidly changing the design and production of industrial and consumer products. During the engineering phase of construction projects, CAD is already increasing productivity and quality. There are still great opportunities to improve project performance by realizing the potential benefits of CAE for construction. This paper describes the practical benefits of CAE for planning construction activities, managing construction operations, and construction quality improvement. The planning benefits include: selecting major construction methods, constructibility analysis, installation sequence planning, and pre-installation checking. Benefits for management of construction operations are increased availability of design information, assistance with construction coordination, and construction feedback and review. The quality benefits are support of QA and QC tasks and problem avoidance. The paper also identifies research and continued development of CAE systems that are required to realize these benefits, describes an example research project to build a data model and provides guidelines to integrate CAE applications across all phases of a power plant project.
