Abstract

This collection of 3 activities is designed to teach the concept of moon phases through active engagement of the learners. The 3 activities are:

1. A Powerpoint presentation and teachers guide for a workshop designed to introduce teachers to the concept of teaching through Active Engagement. Teachers will learn new techniques to engage students as well as how to apply them by participating in a hands-on, interactive model of understanding and teaching the phases of the Moon and eclipses. This workshop was developed as part of a program to bring modern science teaching techniques and activities to high school educators in Developing Countries, although the lessons are relevant to other locations and grade levels.
2. An activity designed for either formal or informal science education settings. Learners use hands-on materials to understand what causes the phases of the moon and eclipses. This activity requires a darkened room.
3. A brief version of the moon phases activity, designed for informal science events where time with the learner is minimal and a darkened room is not available.
