Evaluation of Success of Horizontal Drilling Projects
Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
- In the first stage of this project, the background, technology and history of horizontal drilling is provided, concentrating on the Austin Chalk Pearsall Field in Texas. The key point of this project was to compare the vertical and horizontal well costs and productivity in the Austin Chalk at Pearsall Field. The data was taken from Pearsall Field in the Austin Chalk Trend for the vertical and horizontal wells to produce a reserve and production forecast and a cash flow for both the vertical and horizontal cases to calculate the incremental profitability and productivity. Sensitivity analysis is done of parameters, such as oil price, initial production rate, etc., i.e. if they change, how our cash flow will respond. Also, the analysis of data is done to arrive at the frequency of recoverable reserves.Even though it is a new technology and data is limited, our work showed that unquestionably horizontal wells are more profitable and productive than their vertical counterparts. A thorough geological survey is essential to determine the geological characteristics of the reservoir to drill either horizontal or vertical well in that particular reservoir. This paper also shows in what kind of reservoirs one would drill horizontal wells.
