Abstract
This data set contains optical images of explosions induced by an X-ray free-electron laser in liquid jets and drops. The data was recorded during an experiment performed in January 2014 at the Linac Coherent Light Source at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. Each image is a snapshot of a jet or drop, taken before or after the arrival of a single X-ray pulse. Images of nearly identical explosions, recorded at increasing time delays relative to the arrival of X-rays, were assembled into movies that illustrate the dynamics of explosions from 5 nanoseconds to almost 100 microseconds. The explosion dynamics is analysed in the related publication to predict the effects of ultra-intense X-ray pulses on liquid jets and drops. While these explosions might affect future bioimaging experiments done with X-ray lasers, they also enable future studies of extreme physical conditions in liquids.
