Abstract/Contents

Abstract: The data presented in this visualization represent the transaction information of 426 slave sales registered in a tax registry book between February 13 and May 13 of 1869. The records are located in the Arquivo Nacional, Rio de Janeiro, Recebedorias. This number represents 53 percent of slave sale records containing location information and 31 percent of the entire run of transaction data available in this archival document, which runs from January 2 through May 15. Examining the traits of buyers, sellers, and slaves further highlights the significant changes experienced by all parties caught up in the system.
