Exploring the Realm of Salps: A Study of Changes in Salp Population Across the Equatorial Pacific JELLO (Jellies Existing in Low Levels of Oxygen)
Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
- During a transect across the Equatorial Pacific, salp populations and abundances were studied. Salps were collected from both surface plankton net tows and deeper plankton nets with a discrete sample around 400 m. The locations with the highest salp concentrations correlated to boundaries between different water masses. There was a shift in dominant salp species from Salpa maxima south of the equator to Iasis zonaria further north. From the sample station with the greatest number of salps, the lengths of I. zonaria were compared, examining differences in mean length at discrete depth versus the entire water column. The solitary individuals from the deeper tow, where oxygen levels were very low, were significantly longer. Conversely, the aggregate individuals had a shorter mean length.
