Abstract
A new coronavirus, named COVID-19, surfaced in the fall of 2019. The virus appeared in the United States on the west and the east coast by February, with the first Bay Area cases appearing in late January. Santa Clara County became an early hot spot for the spreading virus. On March 13, 2020 all Stanford library employees were told to work from home with the university mandating the same starting March 16th. Library staff undertook an effort to bring together people within the library with sewing skills to make face coverings for all employees of the Stanford Libraries, approximately 400 people. The goal was to make 3 masks per person or about 1,200 face coverings. Thirty-six people, including family members of library staff, volunteered to sew the masks. The group named themselves the Masquaraders.
