Abstract
This dissertation explores the role of risk and uncertainty in macroeconomics. Two aspects are covered. The first chapter studies the effect of countercyclical financial uncertainty shocks on firms and innovation and their implication for the aggregate economy. The second chapter focuses on uncertainty in individual labor earnings and documents the separate roles of employment and wages in driving the countercyclical dispersion of labor earnings growth.
