The Violent Impact of Sanctions: Access to HIV/AIDS Treatment and Other Life-Saving Resources in Venezuela
Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
- The goal of this paper is to argue that the commonly held conceptualization of violence in contemporary US society, especially surrounding foreign policy should be expanded to incorporate what Rob Nixon deems "slow violence" or "attritional catastrophes", including the impacts of economic sanctions, which are often chosen as an alternative to military intervention. Economic sanctions as a form of violence are clearly exemplified in the lack of access to antiretroviral medications in Venezuela due to the restraints created by United States economic sanctions, with death and tremendous suffering being the common outcome, especially for those who are already oppressed. This paper relies on key sources by Vincenzo Ruggiero, Rob Nixon, and Subcomandante Marcos to craft a theoretical framework that posits the idea of economic sanctions as a form of political and systemic violence carried out by one State against another, then uses the example of access to antiretroviral drugs in sanctioned Venezuela to support this argument.
