Abstract
This essay won or received an honorable mention for The Boothe Prize for excellence in first-year writing. The Boothe Prize recognizes and rewards outstanding expository and argumentative writing by undergraduate students in first-year classes that satisfy the WR 1 requirement. In each award-winning essay, student writers demonstrate clarity of argument, excellent integration of research-based evidence, and compelling prose style. In his essay on post-colonial public memory in South Africa and Britain, Yannick Mofor offers an approach to resolving public protest, suggesting that “the foundation of ... change must be rooted in education.” Mofor draws on careful research that considers the perspectives of people on all sides of the issues--ranging from protesting students in South Africa to British politicians who are not prepared to dismantle their colonial heritage—to offer solutions grounded in the fundamental principles of listening to and respecting all voices.
