Abstract
Jessica Alva, 35 and mother of six, died on April 6, 2019. Her death has been ruled as a suicide by the San Francisco Office of the Medical Examiner, but her family believes she was a victim of domestic violence resulting in death. Her death is being investigated by the Special Victims Unit of the San Francisco Police Department. Alva is an Indigenous descendent of the Blackfeet and Chickasaw Tribes of the United States, as well as the Aztec and Yaqui Tribes of Mexico. If her family's suspicions are true, her story would be one example of a myriad of cases affections Native American communities known as the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW) movement, where data shows that Native women are being murdered and going missing at disproportionate rates.
