Coral: Calculation of Devastation: Disease, Bleaching, and Health of the Palmyra Back Reef
Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
- Coral disease and coral bleaching have devastated reefs throughout the Caribbean, resulting in massive coral mortality events. Researchers have also documented instances of disease in Hawaii. Are coral diseases and coral bleaching present at Palmyra Atoll, one thousand miles south of the Hawaiian Islands? I selected four back reef sites at Palmyra in order to answer this question. Utilizing two methods of survey — a quantitative analysis of transect-based data, and a qualitative sweep of a twenty-five meter radius area — I found little evidence of coral bleaching and disease. However, a deeper investigation into coral reef health via analysis of percent live coral cover revealed drastic differences in level of health between transect sites. Further analysis of physical environmental conditions and consideration of prior anthropogenic constructs suggested that the construction of a causeway negatively impacted back reef health in the southwest portion of the atoll.
