Optimizing the Operations on an Offshore Drilling Rig
Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
Maersk Drilling, a company specialized in offshore drilling operations for oil companies, has approached ME310 at Stanford University and Mannheim University of Applied Sciences to find a way to increase the efficiency and safety of its offshore rig operations. Through our research and engineering, this report demonstrates how to solve the problem of "how might we improve the logistics management workflow and ensure ease of content identification on deck?" and how we came to our solution. This is a very important problem for Maersk Drilling and it connects to one of its primary goals of making every hour spent on a well/platform count.
Our solution, Oceanlog, is a beacon-based GPS tracking system that indicates in real time the location of every container on the rig through a web application. The beacons are attached to containers and are linked to a web application system that is accessible to users on the rig. Our solution also enables coordination across parties involved in planning cargo delivery to and return from offshore rigs.
