Our Futures Forum
Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
- Young people are often asked, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" but rarely "What type of world do you want to live in?" In school settings, current academic learning standards fail to equip students with the tools to address or adapt to emerging social or environmental challenges, particularly those stemming from the escalating climate crisis. Young people deserve an education that allows them to understand real-world problems and prepares them to build better futures for their communities. Our Futures Forum responds to this need by inviting high school students to investigate the future impact of climate change in their neighborhoods and propose solutions designed to support community resilience. The project is grounded in the Stanford d.school’s five Futures Thinking approaches, a set of skills that can help people create positive, nuanced visions for the future grounded in current needs. Students will use these skills to create videos about what they hope their neighborhood will look like in the year 2075 and share these in an online forum with participating students nationwide.
