Abstract
This research project seeks to examine the news coverage of violence and racism against Asian/Asian American communities during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic through analysis of traditional news media. There has been a significant rise in incidents of anti-Asian racism since 2020, resulting from many factors including the global COVID-19 pandemic and tense US-China relations. Through the collaboration of our community partner, the Virulent Hate Project, we were able to analyze their database that includes copious articles regarding anti-Asian racism and responses to these incidents of racism from various news media. In particular, we sought to explore patterns of traditional news media that cover these issues with respect to time, incident type, political affiliation, and location. It is important to recognize that our project examined how these types of incidents are covered, not necessarily examine the incidents themselves. The central question of our project is: How have traditional news media sources in the United States covered stories of anti-Asian racism and response during 2020?
