Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
- Karen (BS Industrial Engineering, 1978) and David Telleen-Lawton (BS Industrial Engineering, 1977; MS Industrial Engineering 1978) describe the story of how they first met when she was a campus tour guide, and he was a research assistant. Additionally, they both recall their study abroad experience, Karen in Italy, and David in Germany, and emphasize how crucial it is to study abroad, even as an engineering major. Finally, they reflect on how campus has changed since their time here as well as how Industrial Engineering has evolved.

Biographical Profile | Growing up in Glenview, Illinois, a suburb north of Chicago, I found “home” after high school when I arrived in California to attend Stanford. Acknowledging that leaving California later in life would be tough, Karen and I moved post-honeymoon to Cincinnati for making toilet paper at Procter & Gamble while Karen joined GE' making jet engines. Fatefully, we decided to return to California and choose Santa Barbara for its size, weather, and location. Our family began there with our daughter -- born five years "premature" according to our life plan. A son (LSJU '05, '06) followed two years later. Most of my career has been with startup companies, typically at the pre-product or pre-revenue stage, both as a consultant and an employee. As a consultant I pioneered the process of getting product and business decision-makers out into the field in front of our future customers while our resources and reputations were still intact. That's how we had a much higher chance of hitting a bull’s-eye with business development expectations. As an encore career, I helped found the Master of Technology Management (MTM) degree at UC Santa Barbara and launched MTM’s successful career development approach. Now retired, I continue to work with startups (includes students' careers) as I focus my time on justice issues. Exercise, travel, and church leadership are top priorities, too. |

Biographical Profile | My early experiences in the nature of engineering were parlayed into a lifetime communicating the business of nature. After earning an MBA locally, I earned a Master's in Economics and an Environmental Policy Certificate at CU-Boulder. My 2007 book: Canyon Voices: the Nature of Rattlesnake Canyon, brought me my 15 minutes of fame and a closer relationship with the earth. When not writing, I serve(d) on the Boards of my church and several Santa Barbara environmental organizations including Santa Barbara Channelkeeper and Channel Islands Restoration. I continue my writing with a bi-weekly column on ecology and economics in our local paper. In town, I love biking, hiking, and paddle boarding. I also enjoy being on the road or in the air with David, with friends, and with grandkids. |
