Biographical/Historical | Ambrose Bierce was an American journalist, author, and editorialist who was born in Indiana. He served in the Union Army during the American Civil War, where he saw action in several battles and worked as a topographical engineer. |
Ownership | D.W. "Jim" Strauss originally loaned this collection to the Elkhart County Historical Society in Bristol, Indiana on behalf of his late wife Betty Ann, who had inherited it from her mother Grace Juanita Bussing Foster, Almeda's daughter. After Strauss's death, their daughters Cindra Heston and Debra Van Dyke donated the collection to Stanford. |
Note | The collection also includes several of Bierce's surveying and drafting tools as well as his field desk. These items are currently housed at Stanford's David Rumsey Map Center. |
