Abstract
This collection of interviews and music primarily focuses on the Irish session and its history, significance, and practice in the Bay Area, particularly at the Starry Plough in Berkeley, CA. Also discussed is Irish sessions at The Plough and Star in San Francisco, trad music in general in the Bay Area, the dance world and its connection with the trad world, the Irish, world, and so on. This particular ethnography focuses on how Charles Keil's concept of participatory discrepancy does or does not describe the cultural fascination of the session with melody and melodic perfection. My collaborators are Makulumy Alexander-Hills, a Stanford student and contraband pianist, as well as John Sherry and Peter Persoffs, locals of the Bay Area and long-time contributors to the sessions of the two restaurants in focus.
