Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
The resource value of domestic wastewater is wasted under the current treatment paradigm. Reimagined designs transform domestic wastewater plants to produce water for direct potable reuse, organic matter to energy or bioproduct, and concentrated nitrogen and phosphorus for or substantially reducing the energy demand of treatment, and reducing excess biomass production.
The first step of including primary anaerobic treatment of raw wastewater exceeded expectations. The pilot-scale systems anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR) operated at Plum Creek Water Reclamation Authority (PCWRA) Test Bed demonstrated long-term, enhanced primary treatment of raw wastewater at psychrophilic temperatures with stoichiometric generation of methane. The next step is the demonstration of a Coupled Hybrid Anaerobic Reactor for the Generation of Energy (CHARGE) system that achieves EPA secondary standards for BOD and TSS from raw wastewater. The CHARGE system will modify the operations and configuration of the PCWRA pilot-scale ABR to meet the project goals.
The goals of the current research is to:
• Meet or exceed secondary treatment performance
• Generate methane from the organic matter removal
• Develop a system model that captures the dominant processes
• Facilitate implementation of downstream resource recovery processes
