COEX - a bidirectional communication system for human-robot collaboration
Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
- In future factories, automated and manual workstations are expected to coexist without any separation. As factories introduce collaborative robots (cobots) to work closely with human operators, safety takes the priority while efficiency remains the key. Wishing to push the boundaries of human-robot collaboration, IMA reached out to our team of four engineering students from Stanford University and four multidisciplinary students from University of Bologna. After conducting extensive needfinding, benchmarking and prototyping, our team designed "CoEx", a bidirectional communication system for human-robot collaboration that gathers information from an ultra-wideband tracking system plus a Kinect vision system and disseminates information via light projections and wearable alerting devices. CoEx bridges the gap of communication and understanding between humans and robots, thus enhances operational safety and improves work efficiency in modern industrial settings.
