O Magrebe Além dos Mares: The Origins of a Brazilian al-Mahjar at the Limits of Modernity
Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
- This capstone project is intended to provide a synthesis of major historiographical approaches to the emergence of al-Mahjar (the Arab diasporic literary tradition) in Brazil at the turn of the 20th century, with a particular focus on the efforts of Lebanese-identifying writers, artists, and intellectuals in disseminating Arabic-language materials through subscription-based printed media. Beginning with an investigation of elite Brazilian attitudes towards Arabs and the Arab world before the republican revolution, the paper subsequently delineates the theoretical foundations of diaspora literature in al-Nahda (the Arab Renaissance) and the mythic-historical topos of medieval al-Andalus. The legacy of the movement’s most widely-circulated magazine, the Liga Andaluza de Letras Árabes, is analyzed for its unique depiction of migrant nostalgia and its relevance to the aesthetic mechanisms by which the first and second generation of Lebanese-Brazilians represented themselves as patriotic Brazilian citizens. Lastly, the literary output of the contemporary author Georges Bourdoukan is given special attention for its nuanced navigation of Lebanese-Brazilian identity following the Lebanese Civil War (1975-1990).
