Essays in political economy
Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
- In this dissertation, I study how political institutions and information shape voters' and politicians' behavior in developing countries. In particular, my dissertation aims to understand how these factors impact entry, selection and political accountability, with special attention on the implications that these hold for development outcomes. Methodologically, I use economic theory to derive clear empirical predictions and subsequently, using quasi-experimental and structural estimation methods, test the implications of the theory. In the first chapter, I investigate how local media in Brazil impact the behavior of politicians and voters by improving voters' information environment. The second chapter of my dissertation shows that money plays a critical role in determining who enters politics. Finally, the third chapter of my dissertation studies the impact of political institutions on accountability
