- Abstract
- Ellen M. Markman, psychology professor and Stanford University’s first female faculty athletics representative (FAR), describes how she was recruited for the position despite being fairly agnostic towards athletics--growing up before Title IX when neither she nor her female friends participated in organized sports. Notwithstanding this lack of expertise, she explains that she was enthusiastic about the challenge and eager to help maintain the integrity of Stanford’s athletic program and support the welfare of its student athletes. She serves in the position from 2005 to 2010. Markman discusses how she prepared for the job, from meeting with past FARs to relying on her husband to narrate football games until she could follow them herself. She goes over the specific duties of the job which included signing off quarterly on every student athlete’s grades and voting on updates to the extensive National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rulebook. In addition, Markman comments on the differences between Stanford’s and other universities’ treatment of student athletes, tells of the difficulties for coaches, students, and fans to abide by all of the NCAA regulations, and weighs in on the issue of paying student-athletes.
