Abstract
Most of the current reservoir simulation models were developed to handle vertical wells. Even if some of them can handle horizontal wells, they may need modifications to accurately represent the calculation of the behaviors of horizontal wells. The two main points considered in this report are equivalent well block radius (r,) and friction loss in the horizontal wellbore. Since Peaceman's equation to calculate T, was developed for vertical wells and thus may provide erroneous results for most of the situations for horizontal wells, a procedure to calculate r, for horizontal wells was proposed which is an extension of the work of Babu et al. (1989). As for friction loss calculation in the horizontal wellbore, the model was modified to calculate friction loss in the horizontal wellbore for single phase flow. The results of the example calculation show that friction loss in the horizontal wellbore might be negligible if only single phase exists in the wellbore. For the friction loss calculation for multiphase flow, it was found that a new method to calculate wellbore pressure was needed to avoid numerical instability.
