Well-Walk Mechanical Engineering
Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
- This project, Well-Walk, is a collaborative effort involving the Stanford Center for Design Research and technology companies Xiaomi and UBTech, with the objective of addressing the limited adoption of consumer robotics, particularly among older adults. By focusing on the needs of this demographic, the team aims to overcome the challenges associated with the hesitance of older adults in adopting new human-computer interaction paradigms. Through an iterative process of needfinding and prototyping, the team identified walkers as a familiar and comfortable framework for incorporating robotic technologies. They developed Well-Walk, a comprehensive system comprising a device holder, charging solution, motorized driving mechanism, and digital user interface. Well-Walk provides comfort, control, and connection to older adults and their loved ones, addressing mobility issues and emotional burdens associated with walker usage. The system offers semi-autonomous and voice-controlled options for movement and communication, facilitating efficient and convenient user experiences. Well-Walk serves as a foundation for employing robotic technologies in the context of walkers, with potential for further exploration and integration of emerging technologies. It enables older adults to benefit from the convenience and capabilities of robotics and technologies that enhance their daily lives.
