Abstract
In modern academic contexts, rich scholarship exists for two seemingly disparate theoretical traditions: human-computer interaction (HCI) theory, and queer theory. The former field examines the manners in which human users and computers may engage to increase user productivity and immersion; the latter field concerns itself with understanding the experiences of non-heterosexual and non-cisgender individuals in society and, more broadly, what range of situations and actions might be rightly labeled as queer. The fields of human-computer interaction and queer theory may not seem to be thematically linked, but I believe that they are, and that understanding that linkage provides a valuable new thread of discourse in both fields. Namely, I believe that the concept of virtuality, a theoretical bedrock of HCI, should be integrated into the lexicon of queer theorists’ work, and queerness, unsurprisingly a theoretical bedrock of queer theory, should likewise be integrated into the lexicon of HCI theorists. The concepts of virtuality and queerness are related by a mutual connection to the concept of passing.
