Smart Steering Wheel and Steering Column
Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
- This project report explores the design and evaluation of a retractable steering wheel mechanism that frees up the driver occupant area in autonomous vehicles with Volkswagen, emphasizing safety, usability, and performance. Adhering to stringent Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS), the design tackles compliance with regulations such as frontal airbag deployment during retraction, with collaborative efforts aimed at optimizing mechanism design and functionality over a 20 week course. Ergonomic principles are integrated to enhance user experience, while experimental plans assess spoke deformation, linkage integrity, cycle testing, and user feedback. Results inform iterative design refinements, including material exploration and consultation with industry experts to ensure alignment with safety standards and manufacturability constraints. Recommendations for future work prioritize a holistic approach, emphasizing continued refinement through iterative testing and collaboration to deliver a reliable solution for automotive applications that meets the evolving needs of autonomous vehicle technology.
