- Mike Montgomery, head coach of Stanford men’s basketball from 1986 to 2004, describes growing up in Long Beach, California, and the career journey that led him to Stanford, including his time at the University of Montana. He recounts highlights from his tenure at Stanford and talks about challenges, including recruiting athletes that could satisfy the admissions office, balancing athletic and academic commitments, and facilities limitations. He reminisces about standout players and his coaching colleagues and talks about his decision to leave Stanford to coach the Golden State Warriors and how his time in the NBA reaffirmed his personal values and clarified his coaching strengths, resulting in his eventual return to college coaching at UC Berkeley in 2008. Lastly, he speculates about the impact that name, image, likeness might have on college basketball.

Biographical Profile | Mike Montgomery served as the head men's basketball coach at Stanford from 1986 to 2004. The winningest men's basketball coach in Stanford history, his successes include 16 postseason appearances (12 NCAA Tournaments, 4 National Invitation Tournaments), including the 1998 NCAA Final Four; four regular season Pac-10 titles; a 2004 Pac-10 Tournament crown; and a record of 393-167 (.702). Montgomery has earned numerous coaching honors, including the John R. Wooden “Legends of Coaching” Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004. He was also the Basketball Times National Coach of Year twice (2000, 2004) and the Pac-10 Coach of the Year on four occasions (1999, 2000, 2003, 2004). In 2016 he was inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame. Prior to coming to Stanford, Montgomery was the head men’s basketball coach at the University of Montana from 1978 to 1986 and an assistant coach there from 1976 to 1978. He also coached at Boise State, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, Colorado State, the Citadel, and the University of Florida. After leaving Stanford, Montgomery was the head coach of the Golden State Warriors from 2004 to 2006 and the University of California, Berkeley from 2004 to 2014. A native of Long Beach, California, Montgomery earned a bachelor of arts degree in physical education from Cal State Long Beach in 1968 and a master’s degree in physical education from Colorado State in 1976. |
