Abstract
As genetic testing becomes more common and an increasing number of new tests become available, demand is growing for genetic counselors who can help people correctly interpret results and make informed decisions. But there is a shortage of genetic counselors who work directly with patients, according to a recent study by the National Society of Genetic Counselors. Assuming a demand of one genetic counselor for every 75,000 people, supply is not expected to match demand for more than a decade. At the same time, the science of gene sequencing is quickly outpacing genetic counselors’ ability to understand and interpret each new genetic variation that is discovered.
