Abstract
Student effort is important not only because it affects achievement, but also because consistent effort may lead to a strong work ethic that can benefit students throughout their entire lives. However, students need an incentive to put forth effort. This study analyzes five predictors of effort using each of student- and teacher-reports of student effort. These are student value of school, enjoyment of school, student-teacher relations, parental involvement, and importance of school to peers. I find a low correlation between student- and teacher-reported effort, yet largely the same significant variables in each model predicting effort. Value of school, enjoyment of school, and student-teacher relations are positive and significant predictors of effort using both measurements of effort. However, only student value of school is a positive and significant predictor of achievement, both directly and indirectly through effort. The effect of parental involvement on effort remains ambiguous, but has a clear negative association with achievement. The differences in effort between white and minority students vary by student and teacher reports.
