Abstract
Nicol Davis Turner (AB Sociology, 1992) describes how the Black Recruitment and Orientation Committee (BROC) weekend inspired her to come to Stanford. She explains how she continued to be active in the Black community at Stanford through the sorority Delta Sigma Theta and being a member of the Black Student Union. She shares stories of her involvement in the Haas Center for Public Service, developing a close friend group, and the Loma Prieta earthquake. Turner recalls making use of many of the opportunities at Stanford, such as seeing speakers like Spike Lee and Mikhail Gorbachev, and exploring different classes.

Biographical Profile Nicol Turner is a successful entrepreneur with more than 25 years of event planning/management, public relations and corporate communications experience in the technology, healthcare and financial services industries. Nicol is the Founder and Owner of Signature Events, LLC, a Napa-based event and wedding design and planning firm. Since 2005, Signature Events, dba Little Blue Box Weddings & Events, has planned hundreds of corporate, nonprofit and social events for a diverse group of organizations including Stanford University, Tyco Thermal Controls, Angry Kiwi Wines, Lifelong Medical, the San Francisco NAACP and the YMCA of San Francisco. Prior to starting Signature Events, Nicol was a venture capitalist with Sienna Ventures, an early-stage technology VC firm. In that capacity, she worked closely with Gilbert Amelio, former CEO of Apple Computer, Inc., honing her general management, strategic planning and deal negotiation skills. Nicol served on the boards and oversaw the firm’s investments in Viaquo Corporation (sold in 2004) and Aisle 411, Inc. (acquired in 2006). In addition to serving as a venture associate, Nicol also oversaw Sienna’s marketing and limited partner relations’ initiatives. In addition to her professional pursuits, Nicol has chaired and/or served on numerous nonprofit boards including the American Association of Plastic Surgeons (development committee), the YMCA of San Francisco (audit committee), the Point Bonita YMCA (Board Vice-Chair) and the Delta San Francisco-Peninsula Foundation (Board Co-Chair). Nicol earned a master’s in business administration from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and a BA Sociology, with an emphasis in Organizational Behavior, from Stanford University. Nicol has one son, Maverick, and lives in Napa, CA. She volunteers at the South Napa Homeless Shelter and is a certified adult literacy instructor and scuba diver.
