E2.04 Coffey 2019 ReNUWIt Annual Meeting Poster
Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
• Current work at the Colorado School of Mines investigates an anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR) for the treatment of raw domestic wastewater at pilot scale.
• The ABR consists of three equally-sized upflow anaerobic sludge blanket compartments followed by a smaller anaerobic fixed film reactor (AFFR) (Fig 1).
• The ABR has continuously treated raw domestic wastewater for over 3 years.
• Effluent quality exceeded EPA secondary standards of 30mg/L for Total Suspended Solids (TSS), even at temperatures below 14 ̊C.
• The ABR can remove over 80% of Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), converting a majority of influent organic matter to methane and carbon dioxide, but it does not address nutrient removal.
• Integrating partial-nitritation with fixed-film anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) in a single-stage reactor (PN/A) will reduce cost and energy consumption for nitrogen removal, relative to conventional methods.
