Bassi-Veratti Collection

- Abstract
- The Biblioteca dell’Archiginnasio in Bologna is the repository for the Laura Bassi e famiglia Veratti archive. Laura Bassi (1711-1778), the second woman to receive a university degree and the first to be offered an official teaching position in any European university, was a figure of great importance to the scientific culture of Enlightenment Italy. She was the most prominent female member of Italy’s leading scientific society, played a central role in the application of Newtonian principles to better understanding of the natural world, and helped create a network of experimenters and teachers connecting Italy with France and England. Alongside her scientific contributions and integral role in the European community of science, Bassi is also interesting for the window she provides into the life and business of a professional woman in 18th century Italy.
