An in situ Validation of Chlorophyll Satellite Imagery
Abstract/Contents
- Abstract
- Ocean color satellite imagery has become a useful tool for many areas of oceanographic research. Even with advanced remote sensing technology, shipboard measurements are important for satellite validation. A transect from 16° S to 14° N across the Equatorial Pacific provided the opportunity to compare satellite values of chlorophyll a with shipboard measurements of flow-through fluorometry, vertical fluorometry integrals, and extracted chlorophyll values. There is a strong correlation between satellite measurements and filtered chlorophyll extractions from depths of 50 meters or less. This relationship dramatically decreases for chlorophyll extractions from depths of 75 meters or more. Additionally, there is a weak correlation between satellite measurements and fluorometry values at all depths. The results from this in situ validation indicate that for this region of the Pacific Ocean, satellite values are representative of chlorophyll concentrations in the upper 50 meters of the water column but not down to the chlorophyll maximum (~75 meters). The discrepancy at all depths between fluorometry values and satellite measurements suggests that in situ fluorometer values may not be an appropriate proxy for chlorophyll a concentrations in this region. Future work includes dividing the data set into distinct latitudinal zones for further regional validation.
