Room : drawing presence and absence

Abstract/Contents

Abstract
Room is a shared aural experience. In Room, the performer sits in a four-foot cubed wooden box, drawing circles on its walls. This sound is captured by a system of contact microphones relayed into a Max/MSP patch that directs, filters, and spatializes these signals onto a dome of speakers surrounding the audience. Encircling the listener in the center of creation, the hidden performer explodes the interiority of the box outside, and brings the presence of performance inside, like a hypercube. Room explores the continuous sound and gesture of the circle, innate and timeless.
